I had exactly the same problem in the following scenario
- installing R8.5.2beta
- on Ubuntu server 8.04
- where ubuntu server was running in a VMware virtual machine
(same messages, and failed in the same place).
I tried different things to no avail, until the following (not sure which of these two steps fixed it).
1) I followed instructions given by Danilo Dellaquila on http://www.danilodellaquila.com/blog/how-to-install-lotus-domino-8.5-on-ubuntu-part-ii
The bits I did were:
I changed the system shell to to bash, as follows:
$ cd /bin
$ sudo rm -i sh
$ sudo ln -s bash sh
also did the following, as per the instructions.
$ cd /usr/bin
$ sudo ln -s mawk gawk
I re-ran the domino server install, but it failed in the same place.
2) I then shutdown the machine and increased the RAM available to the vm from 512MB to 2GB.
When I restarted the machine all worked fine, and the server install ran without problems.
I'm not sure if it was the extra RAM that fixed it, or if the other things had some additional effect after the reboot! (if you have the problem try increasing the RAM first!! - you could post here if that fixes it!)
By the way, I changed the RAM back to 512MB after install had completed. The initial setup and startup of the Domino server went fine with 512MB.
Hope it helps someone
